9/29/12 Letter to New York State DEC Commissioner Joseph Martens Requesting Creation of a Regulatory Ban on Shale Gas Extraction

9/29/12

Joseph Martens, Commissioner
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
Albany, New York USA
Transmitted by electronic mail

Dear Commissioner Martens,

I have expert knowledge on the subject of chemical exposure cancer
causation.  It is most clear that the extraction of shale gas will
increase the exposure of New York State residents to chemical
carcinogens, including:  formaldehyde, benzene, polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs), diesel exhaust particulates and radionuclides.
Exposures to these chemicals have been associated with increased
cancer risk.

Cancer exists at epidemic levels throughout the industrialized world.
Cancer incidence continues to rise worldwide.  It is unreasonable to
take actions that result in significant increases in exposures to
chemicals that cause cancer in a time of global cancer epidemic and
increasing incidence of cancer.

You must act upon your responsibility to protect the environment and
public health.  Please set about creating a regulatory ban against
shale gas extraction in New York State.  Such an action would
demonstrate the capacity of government to stand up to corporate
pressure when public health is threatened by polluting activities.
The people of New York State are watching to see if this is the kind
of government that we have.  If you show New Yorkers that government
is unable to provide this protection, you will find that the result is
loss of your position as a government official.  There must be
accountability for failure to act for the protection of the
environment and public health.  Such accountability is a necessity of
good governance.

9/28/12 News Release: McDonalds is Ground Zero for Industrial Contaminants of Animal Fats Issue. First Occupy McDonalds Results in No Arrest. Occupy McDonalds Continues.

McDonalds is Ground Zero for Industrial Contaminants of Animal Fats Issue.  First Occupy McDonalds Results in No Arrest.  Occupy McDonalds Continues.

I conducted the first Occupy McDonalds in the Market Street restaurant located in the Village of Potsdam, New York.  The experience of going into a retail food sales venue and speaking freely about the presence of industrial contaminants in the animal fat portion of the food supply was very liberating.  Over the course of the past several years, I have conducted educational outreach on the subject of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contamination of the food supply and the damages to health imposed by POPs exposure at current levels of food supply contamination in supermarkets, drug stores and in McDonalds.  However, all of these endeavors were limited to standing at various places in these venues holding a text based educational piece such as a poster or a three-fold display board.  I did not give a spoken word and dance presentation.  When people asked me to explain what POPs were, I spoke to them.  If no one spoke to me, I stood silently.  There was a great amount of good energy in giving the spoken word and dance presentation to the audience having breakfast in the Potsdam McDonalds. People were smiling in a pleasant way.  I could see that several patrons were carefully listening to what I said about POPs contamination, animal fat consumption and disease risk.  It was a wonderful experience of reaching out to fellow Americans to share health protective knowledge.  I am certain that some people learned a considerable amount about the POPs exposure health hazard as a result of my Occupy McDonalds endeavor.

It only takes a little firmness of decision to obtain an opportunity to educate such as described above.  During the course of the Occupy, I was approached twice by McDonalds staff telling me that I must leave.  I declined to do so and was told that the police would be summoned.  The three officers of the Village of Potsdam Police Department who responded to McDonalds’ call for assistance were very professional and well behaved.  I had the opportunity to explain to one of the officers my determination to take a stand on warning the public of the POPs exposure health hazard.  The police stated to me that I was not to return to the Market Street restaurant and that if I did it would be trespassing.  They additionally stated that the restaurant staff were awaiting a corporate headquarters decision about pressing charges.  I was free to leave after speaking with the police.

Once I got home, I called the McDonalds customer service toll free number and spoke with a very pleasant female about the Occupy McDonalds.  She listened to everything I said about the presence of POPs in animal fat and the public health benefit of restricting consumption of animal fats.  I pointed out that hamburgers, hotdogs, bologna, sausage, chicken patties, chicken nuggets and other processed meats were particularly high in animal fat content.  I explained that this meant that more POPs exposure was occurring when people consumed these food items.  I stated that I wanted to commence a dialogue with McDonalds corporate headquarters personnel on the subject of the POPs exposure health hazard.  I requested that as a first step in the creation of this dialogue McDonalds corporate personnel would visit the Cancer Action NY website titled POPs Health Hazard Advisory, accessed at the URL, http://popshealthhazardadvisory.wordpress.com.  The woman that I spoke with apologized for my restaurant experience.  I responded that there was no need for an apology because the staff people had done nothing wrong in doing what was necessary to stop me from conducting POPs exposure minimization educational outreach in the restaurant.

I have spoken with officers of the Potsdam Police Department concerning the Occupy McDonalds trespass and my future access to McDonalds restaurants.  The police stated that McDonalds had decided not to press charges.  They said that I was now persona non grata at the Market Street restaurant, but that there were no limitations upon my normal access to any other McDonalds restaurants.  Additionally, the police stated that it would be up to the McDonalds corporate office whether or not further restrictions were imposed.

I believe that it is my duty as a person with expert knowledge on the subject of the POPs exposure health hazard to continue to conduct Occupy McDonalds events.  I will give spoken word and dance performances in the McDonalds restaurants of New York State so as to provide the people who eat hamburgers with a warning of the POPs exposure health hazard.  Occupy McDonalds is the perfect way to move forward with protecting public health in a time of industrial contamination of the mainstream food supply.

9/28/12 Media Advisory: Green Hassig Visits SUNY Potsdam Campus to Dance and Speak on Protecting America from Bad Americans

Green Hassig Visits SUNY Potsdam Campus to Dance and Speak on
Protecting America from Bad Americans

Friday, September 28, 2012, 2:30 PM-4:30 PM

SUNY Potsdam College,  Outdoor Plaza  Behind Barrington Student Union,
Potsdam, NY USA

The people who love money and will do anything to get more of it have
organized themselves into political parties.  The worst of them are in
the Republican Party, the slightly less bad are in the Democratic
Party.  If the people who do not love money are going to take action
to protect the America that we love, it is time to start taking action
now.  The greed driven corporate tribe has done all this harm:  global
climate change, epidemic levels of cancer, diabetes and heart disease,
hatred of America coming from much of the Middle East and Africa,
horrible offensive wars, selling American jobs to nations that abuse
workers and the Earth, cheating Americans out of their right to have a
representative government, poisoning water and air with shale oil and
shale gas extraction and rendering the governmental public health
entities incapable of warning the public of pollutant exposure health
hazards.  There has got to be an end to this.

The people who want to bring an end to the corporate take over of
government and the ruination of America need to get organized and get
organized fast.  Join the Green Party.  Support Green Party
candidates.  Get out in the streets and Occupy Everywhere!

“My environmental dance performance on the SUNY Potsdam campus is
intended to rouse up a burning desire in the hearts of students to
stop the bad corporate people from further damaging our beloved
America.  I am hopeful that students will see me dancing, hear me
speaking out against the corporate abusers and ask me what they can do
to start protecting our America.”-Donald L. Hassig

9/25/12 Media Advisory: Green Party Candidate Hassig Occupies Main Entrance of Queensbury HS to Share Scientific Knowledge for Prevention During a Cancer Epidemic. I Dance and Speak Out to Warn Americans of Poison in the Food Supply.

Green Party Candidate Hassig Occupies Main Entrance of Queensbury HIgh
School to Share Scientific Knowledge for Prevention During a Cancer
Epidemic. I Dance and Speak Out to Warn Americans of Poison in the
Food Supply.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 6:00 PM-6:50 PM

Queensbury High School, Main Entrance, Queensbury, NY USA

The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum has been
created for the purpose of providing voters with a lively discussion
of candidate proposals for economic development in the Adirondack
region.  I am very happy to have the opportunity to share my proposals
for job creation with the voters of this part of the 21st
Congressional District.  However, in order to make clear my belief
that environmental protection and public health protection must be
given a higher priority than economic growth and profit making, I have
decided to conduct a voter outreach prior to the start of the
candidate forum.

I will focus my pre-forum voter educational outreach on my proposals
for protecting the environment and protecting public health,
including:  banning shale oil and shale gas extraction in America,
stopping construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, banning importation
of fuels sourced in tar sands exploitation, banning tar sands
exploitation in the United States, warning the American public of the
avoidable persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure health hazard,
creating a United States Environmental Health Education Service with a
force 3 million strong, testing every chemical proposed for use in the
economy for carcinogenicity and endocrine disruption and cleaning up
all carcinogen and/or endocrine disruptor contaminated sites in
America.  I will dance and speak out concerning these matters.  I will
share my knowledge and passion for bringing the days of using
scientific knowledge to prevent disease in America.  I will call for
fair elections in which no corporate money is spent to increased the
vote get of any candidate.

I am good.  I am strong.  I am beautiful and I will succeed in
bringing great change in America.  I feel very positive about the
progress that I am making in bringing out the Truth concerning the
past and ongoing exposures to PCBs and other POPs that are part of the
lives of those residing in the 21st Congressional District.  Fort
Edward is the perfect place to make another great stride in bringing
out this Truth.  I see this visit to the Hudson River Valley as a
major thrust in my long standing effort to raise public awareness of
the avoidable POPs health hazard.

9/25/12 Media Advisory: I Will Warn the People of Fort Edward that the Food Supply is Contaminated with Industrial Chemicals. People Everywhere Need to Restrict Their Consumption of All Animal Fats.

A Cancer Action NY/Love the Earth Protect the Earth Change Everything
Campaign News Conference and Environmental Dance Performance:  I Will
Warn the People of Fort Edward that the Food Supply is Contaminated
with Industrial Chemicals. People Everywhere Need to Restrict Their
Consumption of All Animal Fats.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 4:00 PM-4:45 PM

Washington County Municipal Center, Main Entrance to Building B, 383
Broadway, Fort Edward, New York USA

The contamination of the global food supply with persistent organic
pollutants (POPs) began in the early 1900s.  Monsanto Corporation
began manufacturing and distributing PCBs in the 1930s.  DDT use
became widespread in the 20th century.  Use of 2,4,5-T, which
contained a large quantity of dioxin byproduct, occurred extensively
throughout the United States, Canada and New Zealand during the
mid-1900s.  Brominated flame retardants have been used heavily during
the course of the later half of the 20th century.  The feeding of
waste animal fat to food animals has greatly multiplied the quantities
of POPs in the mainstream food supply.  It is only in organic
livestock production that a prohibition against this dangerous feeding
practice exists.  Plastics production has increased rapidly during the
past 60 years.  Disposal of waste plastics via open waste burning and
incineration has created and released into the outdoor atmosphere vast
quantities of dioxins and PCBs.  As a result of these careless and
heavy uses of man-made chemical substances, the animal fat portion of
the food supply has come to  contain dangerous levels of total POPs.
This health damaging degree of POPs contamination of environment and
food supply has existed since as early as the 1960s.

POPs contamination has existed for a sufficient period of time for a
large number of people to become sick.  Those people residing in the
vicinity of POPs contaminated sites:  the GM Powertrain Superfund Site
located in St. Lawrence County, New York State on the St. Lawrence
River West of Akwesasne, the Dow Dioxin Superfund Site in MIdland
County and Bay County in the state of Michigan, the most heavily
contaminated portion of the Hudson River Superfund Site in the Town of
Fort Edward in Washington County, New York State, and the American War
dioxin hotspots at Bien Ho, Da Nang and Phu Cat in Vietnam have
received some of the heaviest exposures to POPs due to the fact that
they have breathed POPs that evaporate from these sites in addition to
having eaten POPs when consuming local fish and wildlife.  These
exposures took place in addition to exposures received via consumption
of mainstream food supply items containing background levels of POPs.
Several of these populations have been the object of extensive
epidemiological studies.  Accidental poisoning incidents have occurred
during the past 100 years, which resulted in the sickening of large
numbers of people.  These populations have also been studied.  The
volume of scientific literature describing serious damages to health
resulting from POPs exposure has grown large.  Consensus now exists in
the scientific research community that current levels of POPs exposure
for the general population are of such magnitude that minimization of
exposure is warranted.

The world’s governmental public health entities:  World Health
Organization (WHO), United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDCP), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Health Canada, and the European
Commission’s Directorate General for Health and Consumers have failed
to warn the general public of the avoidable POPs exposure health
hazard.  This failure has taken place due to the nearly total control
that is exerted by corporations over the world’s governments.
Obsessive interest in profit making has caused the corporate powers to
turn a deaf ear to calls from activists and scientists for provision
of such a warning.

In 2010, the WHO published, “Persistent Organic Pollutants:  Impact on
Child Health”.  This public health policy guidance document calls for
a worldwide effort to minimize children’s exposure to POPs.  Cancer
Action NY has advocated for publication of a POPs health hazard
advisory by the WHO, the Directorate General for Health and Consumers,
the US FDA, and Health Canada since 2010.  No governmental public
health entity has yet published any such document.

In collaboration with Cancer Action NY, the CDCP has recently begun to
create two documents, one on dioxins and another on PCBs.  According
to Dr. Michael Hatcher, in the CDCP’s Agency for Toxic Substance and
Disease Registry (ATSDR), these documents will present the message
that current levels of dioxin and PCB exposure are harming Americans
who consume average quantities of animal fats.  These documents are
intended for use in the education of physicians.  Upon completion of
these educational pieces, ATSDR plans to produce spin-off documents
intended for use educating the general public.  This is a slow way of
providing a warning of a major avoidable disease hazard.  It is clear
that corporate pressures are limiting the ability of the CDCP to take
action.

Scientists and activists are not controlled by corporations.  In the
US, we enjoy freedom of speech and are committed to exercising that
freedom for the benefit of the general public.  Cancer Action NY has
published a POPs Health Hazard Advisory and placed this educational
document on the internet at the URL which follows.

http://popshealthhazardadvisory.wordpress.com

Cancer Action NY continues to advocate for action by governmental
public health entities around the world to warn the populations that
they serve about the POPs exposure health hazard.  Thus far our
greatest success has been with the Albany County Public Health
Department.  The website of the Albany County Public Health Department
now presents a dioxin exposure reduction educational message.  In
April of 2011, the St. Lawrence County Legislature considered a POPs
exposure minimization education resolution that would have established
a POPs exposure minimization education project within the St. Lawrence
County Public Health Department.  That resolution was not adopted.
Nonetheless, we are making steady progress toward the day when POPs
exposure minimization education will be provided by the St. Lawrence
County Public Health Department.
