8/9/12 Letter to William Owens, Member US House of Representatives Requesting that He Ask Federal Government Scientists Why the Public has not Received Warning of POPs Exposure Health Hazard

8/9/12

Hon. William Owens
US House of Representatives
Washington, DC USA
Transmitted by electronic mail

Dear Congressman Owens,

Our organization has worked for several years to share scientific
knowledge with you on the subject of persistent organic pollutants
(POPs) exposures and damages to health.  We are hopeful that these
efforts have raised your awareness on this issue so as to make clear
in your mind the existence of the POPs exposure health hazard.  We
have requested that you read the 58 page 2010 World Health
Organization (WHO) report titled, “Persistent Organic Pollutants:
Impact on Child Health”.  This public health policy guidance document
presents an easily understandable description of the POPs exposure
health hazard.  WHO calls for action to minimize the exposure that
children around the world are receiving to POPs.  The US government
public health entities, including:  the Environmental Protection
Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Cancer
Institute and the Department of Agriculture have not taken a single
step to warn the parents and children of America of the POPs exposure
health hazard.  Sister agencies of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, the National Center for Environmental Health and the Toxic
Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) are the only federal
government agencies that have begun to provide the public with a
warning of the POPs exposure health hazard.  These agencies are
working with Cancer Action NY and are currently producing a document
on the subject of dioxin exposure health effects and a document on the
subject of PCB exposure health effects.  These documents are designed
as educational materials for physicians.  I have received the
assurance from Dr. Michael Hatcher in the ATSDR that upon completion
of the documents described above his agency will commence the work of
producing documents that are designed to educate the general public on
these subjects.

Please contact the agencies named above with the exception of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for
Environmental Health and ATSDR for the purpose of requesting that the
scientists employed in these federal government public health entities
give you an answer to the following question.  Why has the federal
government public health system failed to provide Americans with a
warning of the POPs exposure health hazard?

Thank you for your careful consideration to this most important
request.  I believe that it is of critical importance to the health of
the American people that the truth come out about this failure.  Only
the truth will prepare the way for a new federal government that
places environmental protection and public health protection at a
higher priority than corporate profits.

joyous in Nature,

Donald L. Hassig
